Exam file name : D2M-AVC.ZIP Title conquered : DOOM II Tyson Author : Alvin "Viper" Chee Completion date : 1995 07 14 Game and version used : DOOM II v. 1.9 Log entry : D2T AVC Alvin "Viper" Chee 02 03 04 LFR-FRF-RRR : Alvin_Chee Substitutions? : N/A System used : 486DX4-100 VLB with SB16 Controls used : keyboard only, with SPACE exchanged with ALT Free interpretation : MAP08 UV Tyson Comments : My first Tyson entry was invalid because MAP08 had been added by Jonathon, and I didn't read the rules proeprly on the subsitutions. But this package definitely satifies the rules. Unfortunately, the 3 assigned levels I received all did not have beserk or chainsaw. Punching the monsters to death without beserk is very tiring and rather boring. MAP02: The hardest part of this level is when I had to jump into the dark basement to grab the blue key. Lots of imps inside, and I had to conserve some bullets to kill the sergeants in the exit room too. Your punching ability had better be good for this. But using the barrels is a plus point. However, I feel that this level should be in MEDIUM, but it was classified as EASY. MAP03: This level was a lot easier than MAP02, because there was at least a supercharge, mega-armor and lots of health and bullets. I would say this level should be in EASY, but it was classified as MEDIUM. MAP04: This level is incredibly difficult, and I don't know how I managed to complete it. It takes too many tries to do it, and somehow I was on form for that moment to cross it. There is very little health and armor on this level compared to the other 2 levels, so I think its a miracle. Conserving bullets to kill sergeants meant I had to kill all the imps with my normal fist. I decided that exchanging this with MAP08 would make my life easier. MAP08: This is my free interpretation level, since Jonathon felt that it shouldn't go to waste. MAP08 was easier because it had a chainsaw, and all I needed to do most of time is to lure the monsters to fight each other. However, there is an element of luck involved because the cyberdemon sometimes doesn't get killed by the barons of hell. Or sometimes, he gets killed but there are simply too many barons of hell left. MAP19: Getting an out-of-base level was extremely frustrating, because most of the levels were just not designed to be completed in Tyson mode. In general, I had to exclude levels with cyberdemons, spiderdemons, archviles and also levels with too many revenants, pain elementals, and mancubuses. After looking through the FAQ, I decided on trying MAP22, because it had very few monsters, but the layout of the level required a lot of luck to complete. Then I tried MAP19, and it was extremely tedious, because the number of monsters in this level is too many. However, there was a lot of health and bullets, and the two arachnotrons were very helpful in killing some of the monsters. I would say that this level is MEDIUM though, because although it was tedious, it wasn't that difficult to complete. And a word of warning, the lmp file takes more than one hour to finish! Author info : I still like to play Doom and Doom II for some time to come, and am eagerly waiting for more releases from Id Software, but I don't think I would be trying for anymore DHT titles. I would like to say thanks to my colleagues in Creative Technology where I work, for their moral support in getting this Tyson title. And I still refuse to use the mouse in solo play or deathmatch play, and I don't use strafing either! After all I still beat a lot of good Doom players by just using the keyboard only. But sometimes to move sideways, I use the arrow keys and move against the wall, but no strafe key. I design my own WAD files in my free time, but I've very little free time nowadays. And if I can find enough time, I'll do a major add-on with a Chinese KungFu Doom, by replacing lots of sounds, music and graphics.
