Exam file name : D1I-SYW .ZIP or maybe even .ARJ Title conquered : DooM I Incubus Author : S.;-) Widlake Completion date : December 3rd. 1995 Game and version used : The "Ultimate" DooM and/or DooM Version 1.9 Log entry : - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CHAL: D1I SYW S. Widlake 28 31 13 RFL-LLF-FRL : S.Widlake@rl.ac.uk (S. Widlake) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Substitutions : "unfortunately" - YES: E1M3 with E2M5 or E1M8 System/s used : Viglen 486/66 VLB with S*B*Pro OR Viglen P90 PCI with S*G*Pro Controls used : [IBM PS/2] KeyBoard + Bent Micro$**t Mouse With everything redefined as follows... Keyboard : Default settings but with... S : Move (Strafe) Left F : Move (Strafe) Right D : Move Backwards Space : Speed On Shift : Use [- which was not used !] Mouse : Yes it is Bent :-) LMB : Fire RMB : Forward This configuration has the disadvantage of NOT being able to "Strafe" sideways whilst moving (and running?) backwards... Perhaps this is something to do with *MY* keyboard or my PC's controller - I dunno - it would have worked fine if I had used A + S and D BUT this is the config I've used for about a year or so and I ain't gonna change just for this challenge... Maybe, next week :-) Episode 2 Map 8 - Easy : This is one of _MY_ levels so I didn't anticipate any problems - I completed this level the first time I tried it - Just take one soul-sphere, plus the mega-armour, grab the rocket-launcher and run out "AT 'IM". I didn't worry about those stupid skulls. Just Frag Mr. CYBER as soon as possible - With one small variation on this "Just-FAST" method - Be careful NOT to get killed :-) I did the silly dancing, with the keyboard, at the beginning - So, if I use the mouse, then I must have descided to re-record this. Episode 3 Map 1 - MedM : This one took a FEW more tries. But not THAT many more :-) Doing the dance at the beginning only caused more problems than it was worth. Also, there are two places to do this DURING this level - After the First Bunch of imps (IF there's not a caco waiting for Ya ?) And before the Last Bunch (- respawned pinkoes should get trapped behind the pillars). I was determined to use as many of those initial 250 bullets as I could and I was going to try to Frag everything at least once - I didn't quite make it but, Hey 103% kills wasn't so bad :-) The only place where you need that bit of luck is after you grab the shotty and Leap into the Small Imp Room - That one got me most times I didn't make it. Episode 1 Map 3 - Hard : I was counting on getting either E2M3 or E3M2 (rather than E1M3 or E1M5) as my "Hard" level as these are both WAY easier BUT... For "Hard" read "Really Bleeding Difficult - almost impossibly so". Why this - and E1M5 - is even in the base is a complete mystery to me - no-one has EVER done EITHER of these as part of a DHT-exam and so no-one should really be expected to complete these. I have emailed Mr. DHT asking for some justification on this [ and a different "hard" exam ;-) just take a look at the DHT5.LOG - I get assigned exactly the same three levels as the previous, sorry next, D1I candidate one whole challenge away ] but I don't really want to wait another four weeks for a reply ( maybe giving "him" a new exam with E1M5 I suppose which "he" can also do, but that's another story :-) - And So, just like previous candidates, I need to do *TWO* Out-of-Base levels... Sour Grapes ? - You Bet !!! Out-of-Base (1) - E2M5 : Rated as a Medium [ - Easy ] D1I-JRH.TXT : > E2M5 This one's the only relatively easy one left. > Secret exit is out. 15 flaming skulls on steroids rip you to shreds > the moment you materialize. Going for the regular exit is possible. > I did it first try ... Just gotta keep moving, like in lightning... Jonathan was probably right in saying that this level was the only one left that was relatively easy. But as for the "Secret exit is out", NO WAY !? ( GottA be CarEFuL HerE, hey ZlaktO ;-) The Regular exit is the way out - Follow the "lightning" route but clear each area as you go along. The hardest parts are the Beginning [ expect to get well damaged ] and the End [ just run for it ] but there is some health and an easy combat-armour to take on the way. That said, this level took a good number of attempts before I was in a fit state to run the gauntlet at the end... and I almost forgot that I actually needed to hit the exit switch to finish this ;-) Actually, I'm quite surprised that this level was still left available ready for the taking - Cheers to the previous D1I Qualifiers for leaving such a simple Second O-o-B level :-) Now for the REAL Reason for this D1I Exam... Out-of-Base (2) - E1M8 : Rated as a Medium [ - Hard ] D1I-JRH.TXT : > E1M8 Swarming Pinks and Invisible Pinks render this an impossibility. > Also, you must have both Barons dead at the same time to lower the > walls. Not easy with chaingun/shotgun, especially with Invisibles > chomping and respawning. E1M8 on NightMare! - A mission "impossibility" ?? Nope !!! - I don't think so... About six weeks ago - I really don't know why I tried this but - I discovered that E1M8 on NightMare was not only possible but actually not THAT difficult... Anyway, I did a bit of bragging about this in the r.c.g.doom.. usenet groups and got a response of "So what ?" which was quickly followed by another saying, "I apologise and bow down in the shadow of your greatness." BIG 8-) Cheers for that. Now someone suggested that I put in for a D1I DHT-exam - I did and started playing DooM on the NightMare! difficulty, more seriously... Finally, one week ago I got my "exam" with that silly little dance - the initial two levels weren't a problem BUT I found myself shaking after re-trying E1M3-NM a few more times... NO WAY could I complete that one... Maybe, next week :-) Anyway, I found a second Out- of-Base level and then started re-trying this one. This is the most difficult but it ain't THAT hard - the only thing to note is that I did the silly dancing at the end... doing it at the beginning can get tedious since you need to get lucky and that can take a few goes... Enjoy. Hi Hoof - You're Wrong, again - D1I was NOT "closed" ! :-) And the C.H.W.P President will return, soon :-) I plan to do a... Free interpretation : Single-Player "IPX-NET" Session that Everyone should be able to -PlayDemo. Episode One on NightMare! As far as I can get... E1M3 probably ;-) This isn't particularly amazing, but it does show a quite differnet aspect of playing DooM - One that I've been "pushing" for over a year ;-) Anyway, try it - you might like it... Comments : Author info : Now, as if I haven't written enough already - I've had my rant about E1M3 - and E1M5 - but if the D1I is not to become closed (this would be a bad thing) IM(NS)HO the base would need a bit of a "revamp" with medium and hard being split into... "Medium Easy" - all mediums & E2M5 (cos it's not that hard) "Medium Hard" - E2M3 E3M2 and E1M8 (never been done before) and "Hardest" - E1M3 and E1M5 And with all of the remaining out-of-base levels being included in "Hardest" (until someone says they're not that difficult ;-) and then competitors being required to complete ANY one of these "Hardest" levels to qualify - That would really open up D1I and allow many more qualifiers. Just a thought ;-) If you're looking out for other (better) DHT exams to download then I'd suggest you take a look at all of the ???-JRH and the ones by ???-AAK. Jonathan has completed *ALL* of the possible DHT-exams [ bar ONE ] including both of the once-only and Epic "lightning" [ nine levels on-the-trot all under par ] Titles. However, Jonathan said a few thing in his .TXT files that are wrong - and invited people to prove him thusly ;-) 'Anthe' is the President of the "Club of Hoof/y Wrong Provers" - C.H.W.P. Just take a look at his .LMP's - They're excellent! And if you think he wimps-out by subtituting levels, he does this to make these exams more difficult. Oh, and before you get pissed and consider emailing me just to say that forming this Real (C.H.W.P) Club is not a "nice" thing to do... Jonathan Hoof is an "official supporter" (his words). Me - The Sixth and (very nearly the) Last D1I... That is... until 'Anthe' returns from his holiday in the "Useless Stations" - unless the rules are changed like I suggest they are. Thanks and Respect To Steffen Winterfeldt - THE *D1S* - Frank: You didn't use LARGE ENOUGH LETTERS to decorate this player... Steffen Winterfeldt, THE "DooM 1 Schwarzenegger", D1S-SW.ZIP For completing The-Whole-Damn-Game on NightMare - GET IT !!! For his encouragement and also some assistance with this exam. If any one in the .UK or Western Europe wants to take on a D1I over iFrag between 12 noon and 2:00 pm (.UK time) DooM or DooM II -Timer 20, Episode 1 or Smaller II levels or even some Pwad - I'll take you on "blind" if you want to win that badly - You know where to contact me... Finally, Thanks go to Frank for creating this whole DHT thing! Oh, in case it means anything to anyone... I run the rival (?) "Compet-N" area right next to the DHT-Exams one on the Primary DooM Archive, ftp.cdrom.com - remember to use a "mirror" site. Compet-N .LMP's - Give !!! ;-) Last thing - This "Once-Only" Epic Titles Rule, SUX !!! - Email Frank and tell him to drop it... S.;-) "E1M8-NM!1" and C.H.W.P Vice-President, and now, D1I S.
