I choose the simple route - kill shotgunner, then my dance, then kill shotgunner and something in the building (to fulfill the 'kill 2 after dance' rule), run to secret switch and hit it through the wall (this trick courtesy of Jonathan Hoof's excellent D1L LMP) E2M2 - I considered this the hardest of my base levels. Dance is right after the blue key. Straightforward berserk fist work until I acquire the much-coveted plasma gun. Took me quite a few tries to finally get this one right. E3M2 - Straightforward - I get the green armor, then the plasma gun. Then I dance. Then it's off to the blue key, round the cacodemons, then I hose down a bunch of lost souls. Funny, the kill screen shows 0%, despite much lost-soul death. Hmmm. I would have called it a medium myself, but I'm grateful I got this instead of E1M3 or E1M5! E2M3 - My out-of-base expander. Took me about 100 tries. I finally settled on a pattern of getting the chaingun, then the berserk fist, rad suit, and armor in the chaingun room. Next I go for the shotgun, then toward the plasma gun. After killing 2 lost souls, I do the dance (while invisible). I get the blue key, then the blue armor, then it's off to the races toward the exit. Nice 6% health I have when I square off with the last cacodemon, and a spectator warned me of a distinct shortage of bullets while killing the last few Pinkies. I call it hard, as it was distinctly more difficult than my medium (and also much harder than my 'hard' E3M2 - but I'm still happy I didn't get E1M3!) E2M4 - My free level. I was reading Jonathan Hoof's ideas on the fact that D1I was 'closed' already, so I decided to test his theories (see D1I-JRH.TXT). So I did E2M4 on Nightmare as well. It also makes up for the fact that early D1I contestants had to expand the base twice due to the impossibility of both original hard levels (E1M3 and E1M5), but I got E3M2 instead. Dance at start, grab the shotgun. Then it's a slalom thru the imps, and a shotgunning of the baron by the blue key. Next I backtrack toward the yellow key, kill two shotgunners, grab the key and run from the baron. Next is a quick health treat, then the plasma gun. Hose a few cacodemons, and bolt for the end area. The rest is straightforward. If I were expanding the base with this level I'd have called it a medium (but a little on the hard side - it was tougher than E2M2). Perhaps a future D1I contestant will put it in the appropriate spot. Hopefully my experience with D1I will inspire others to try it, as there's at least 2 out-of-base levels that have been attained before (E2M4 by myself, and E2M5 by JRH). Also with two doable hard levels (E3M2 and E2M3), doing the double-base-expansion will not be necesary for some. But then again, when JRH theorized that D1I was about closed, only E1M3 and E1M5 were available.
