Exam file name : d1gm-gib.zip Title conquered : Doom 1 Grand Master Author : George I. Bell (GIB) Completion date : 1996 05 28 Game and version used : Ultimate Doom v. 1.9 Log entry: CHAL: D1GM GIB George I. Bell 28 25 15 RRF-RLR-LLF : George Bell Substitutions? : NO Additions to the base : E4M9 (Hard), E4M4 (Hard, but see Notes) Free interpretation : E4M4 GM style, finishing with zero ammo System used : P166, 16MB RAM, SB 32, Diamond Stlth 64 Video Card Controls used : Mouse+Keyboard Mouse : Left button - fire Right button - forward Keyboard : Z - strafe left X - backward C - strafe right Ctrl - speed mode (always) I was glad to see the new amendment allowing Episode 4 levels to be added to the base. It's not that bad doing all the D1GM hard levels, but new territory is always more fun. E2M8: EZ! I take no damage the whole lmp! E2M5: I had more trouble with this than E1M5, but maybe this was because I had never played this complex level before. I got a bit low on health near the end, so was playing conservatively, also I got lost once. Overall the most boring lmp of the lot. 19:10. E1M5: This is one of my favorite maps, and I know it well. After working in NightMare for months, not having the monsters respawn makes life so much easier. In the middle of this lmp, I decided to try fighting the baddies released outside rather than running back to the lift like everyone else I've seen, which worked out well considering this was the first time I tried it. 8:28. E4M9: "Fear". It's quite tough staying alive at the start of this one. But fear this level no longer, eventually I found a way to survive; you'll have to watch to find out how. I was so focused the first time I recorded this I forgot to do my dance, so I had to redo the whole thing. In this lmp I tried many times to get a Baron and Cacodemon to fight, but they must have signed a peace treaty. I can't understand why I only get 57% items at the end, how could I have missed that much?? 12:31, dance at about 5:30. FREE: My free interp is E4M4 GM style. From a monster count, it appears this might be easy, but you must treat the start very carefully or all hell will break loose. Kind of like starting in a cage filled with poisonous snakes! Once you survive the start it is quite a bit easier, but you soon discover there is only about half the ammo needed to shoot every monster! At the end you can see I'm always walking around with only about 10 shells and a handful of bullets. Cleverness is required here getting the monsters to fight. The end of this lmp is cool because I fire my last shell at the only remaining Caco and he dies (whew!), I walk through the exit with nothing but the shirt on my back! I could have used the invulnerability better (see my D1T exam), but I like the tension in this ending. 9:47. Notes: I'll leave it up to Frank and Jeff as to whether E4M4 (since it's a free interpretation) should be added to the base. I don't have a strong opinion about it. I'd rate E4M4 and E4M9 about the same. I had trouble deciding if they were both medium or both hard, but looking carefully at the rest of the base I rated them both hard. Try to survive the start of either one if you don't believe me! I think the Episode 4 levels are on average going to be harder than the earlier ones. Author I now have 7 titles: D2GM, D2SG, D2M, D2I, D1I, D1GM, D1T. Info: My wife has signed me up with DOOMaholics anonymous, but I never can find the time to go to the meetings!!
