Exam file name : D1GM-ACV.ZIP Title conquered : DOOM 1 Grand Master Author : Ariel C. Vera Completion date : 1995 09 16 Game and version used : Ultimate DOOM v. 1.9 Log entry : CHAL: D1GM ACV Ariel C. Vera 39 29 36 RFR-RFL-RFR : "Ariel C. Vera" Substitutions? : N/A System used : Pentium 100 with 32megs of ram, ATI Mach 64 PCI video card (2 megs dram), 21" Viewsonic monitor and Sound Blaster Awe32 running under Win95. All levels played at full screen at approx 45 fps. Controls used : Keyboard only, everything redefined as follows... Arrow keys for movement, CTRL to fire, Shift to run, ALT to strafe, and INS to open (numeric keypad) Free interpretation : E4M8 - UltraViolent with Fast Monsters. Nothing terribly fancy or amazing. I really wanted to do E4M9, but after numerous tries and just plain exhaustion I settled on E4M8 so I could finish the exam! ;-) The dance is in the first room after I have cleared out most of the first two rooms. Comments : I had completed a few other levels that other Grand Masters had completed and _thought_ I was well prepared... HA! After being humbled.. I downloaded completed lmps of 2 of the levels I was assigned and then was on my way! SO, I echo the same advice given in the DHT text file... Check out other people's completed lmps if you get stuck. At this skill level, strategy is the most important thing. Once an optimal strategy is found, 75% of the battle is won! You already know how to shoot and move, otherwise you wouldn't be here! E2M9 : This level (at first) seemed much too difficult to be rated as easy. But once I had seen how another Grand Master played it, it was much easier to do. The dance is near the end inside the room. Key to this level is to get the CacoDemons and Demon Lords to kill each other. If you find yourself getting into the fray before 90% or more of the baddies are dead, you are making it much too hard for yourself. E3M9 : This level also seemed much harder (at first) than it's medium rating. Mainly because I was always low on ammo. But after seeing how another Grand Master did it, I finished it in one try. But a word of advice, DON'T pick up the invisibility sphere, it was a very stupid move on my part. I much prefer knowing where incoming projectiles are going so I can more easily dodge them. When you are invisible the monsters fire in all kinds of random patterns making the chances of you taking some unwanted damage increase greatly. The keys to this level are to get as many intra monster battles going as possible (to conserve your ammo), use your rockets well and sparingly (be accurate with the CyberDemon) and save the invulnerabilty and BFG for use in the last room to kill as many baddies as possible so you are just left with mop up duty. The dance is done in the narrow hallway area where the first 4 or 5 demons are located. E3M6 : This one was brutal for me (many, many attempts) until I figured out my strategy. There is not alot of health to be found and the lava is a 20% pain in the butt loss. The key to this level is to save the 2 invulnerabilty spheres for the end of the level and be VERY frugal on your ammo. Use exactly what is neccessary to kill a threat or you will be sorry... ;-) And be vary wary of your health it can get low in a hurry. The dance is done about midway through. It is done in front of the stairway near one of the invulnerabilty spheres. E2M3 : My addition to the base. It was the first one that was available. The whole key to this level is the beserk powerup. You need this to kill the majority of the lesser bad guys so that you will have enough ammo to kill the faster moving and more lethal ones. The dance is done near the blue door. I would rate this as medium. Author info : Doom 1 Master (now Grand Master) who loves to load up his trusty shotgun and kick some demon butt! Can't wait for Hexen and especially Quake!
