Broadly: Gameplay and ambiance, while keeping the amount of complex textures to a minimum. This was done in an attempt to highlight mappers' use of map dynamics, lighting, elevation and thing placement. The project did not define any strict limitations on resources or ports utilized, which is why one will find such a broad assortment of interpretations on the central theme. Regarding the future of the Monochrome Project, the forum thread (listed above - "Project URL") is still actively accepting entries without restrictions, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Regarding a possible DWMMP2 megawad, discussion of its parameters and/or restrictions (if any) is ongoing as of the release date.
