=========================================================================== Archive Maintainer : Update to : Advanced engine needed : ZDoom, JDoom Primary purpose : Single+Coop play / Deathmatch =========================================================================== Title : Beyond Kadath Filename : beydkdth.wad Release date : June 16, 2005 Author : Chad Noles Email Address : wots.taters@gmail.com Other Files By Author : Misc. Author Info : 33 year old Doom player Description : This is a story-driven WAD roughly in the vein of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Make sure you read the back story at the end of this file as it will enhance your gameplay. This WAD was started in 1995 while I was still in college, then shelved for ten years while I participated in "Real Life". I recently had some free time and, after discovering a number of outstanding DOOM utilities (DoomBuilder is an incredible editor), I decided to part the mothballs and finish the WAD. The original WAD was greatly extended and enhanced, and I'm satisfied with the result. I hope you will be too. Additional Credits to : iD software, H.P. Lovecraft. There are a number of new textures in this WAD, some made by me and some taken from various free texture collections found around the web. The new background music was taken from a free MIDI site. =========================================================================== * What is included * New levels : 1 Sounds : No Music : Yes Graphics : Yes Dehacked/BEX Patch : No Demos : No Other : No Other files required : * Play Information * Game : DOOM2 Map # : Map01 Single Player : Designed for Cooperative 2-4 Player : Designed for Deathmatch 2-4 Player : Designed for Other game styles : Difficulty Settings : Yes * Construction * Base : New from scratch Build Time : > 3 months Editor(s) used : DoomCAD 6.1, DoomBuilder, XWE Known Bugs : none May Not Run With... : Original Doom2.exe * Copyright / Permissions * Authors (MAY/may NOT) use the contents of this file as a base for modification or reuse. Lowell Institute for Paranormal Research 1304 Innsmouth Drive Arkham, MA 01924 The situation is dire yet still I must pause to write, to record the events I have witnessed during the last three years. The world deserves to know what we have foisted upon through blind scientific ambition and clutching minds whose fumbling reach far outstripped their grasp. Henry was a brilliant fool. I continue to admire the man--his sharp wit, his intellect--despite his damnable fixation to tease apart the fibers of the unknown without regard to what might be patiently waiting on the darker side of knowledge. I hate him as well, and myself, for what we have done. No matter; Henry is dead, killed while trying to correct a mistake that began the day the Aude Sapere Project was conceived. My nightmare begins simply enough. I was fresh from University, the ink barely dry on my newly-minted PhD. What I labored over for years there at Miskatonic isn’t important. One autumn morning I received a call from my old advisor and was given the good news that my curriculum vitae was perfect for a project Dr. Lowell was organizing. I was dumbstruck. That a scientist of Doctor Henry Phineas Lowell’s eminence wanted me, a relatively unknown scientist, as an assistant researcher was my young ego’s delight, and a fine reward for all my hard work. Only later, as I left the Institute, did I realize that I had accepted a position with no idea what the area of study would be nor the part I would play in the research. Not that I cared; I went home, told my wife the good news, and we spent a joyous evening together, excited by what the future might hold. Time grows short, and I must restrict my writing to the facts. An archeological team, under the leadership of Dr. Lowell, discovered something wildly unexpected during a routine dig in the mountains of Tennessee. The artifact was a large stone tablet covered with unknown glyphs and runes and buried at the entrance of what appeared to be an antediluvian burial chamber. The Institute was contacted immediately and a team of specialists was sent to recover the tablet and secure the site. I was one of the specialists. An abandoned sewer system that lay nearby was quickly purchased and converted into a base of operations as it was near the dig site and already punched deeply into the mountains. The arcane tablet was preserved and studied for over a year. The rough translation told of Kadath, a temple and burial site of a long-forgotten race. Of what lay buried there in the endless blackness, the tablet would not say, but hinted at an unspeakable horror. I was the researcher who finally discovered that the tablet was not merely a chronicle but was also a magical seal, a hastily-chiseled ward against something waiting there in the dark amid the gnawing worms and insects. Dr. Lowell had a number of wealthy benefactors who were intensely interested in his continued progress and my warnings went unheeded. Their financing allowed the Institute to expand the sewer into a massive underground complex. The scientists pushed deeper and deeper into the mountain, seeking the temple. I was given a raise and full control over the department that translated the artifacts being brought up almost daily from the caverns. I no longer voiced any objections. We learned things that man was not meant to know: bizarre rites, the summoning of slave creatures, blueprints for alien technology whose operation seemed to be only loosely underpinned by scientific principles. Of these last technological marvels, teleportation caught Dr. Lowell’s eye, and the gleam within that darting orb became more and more troubling as the days flew past. Henry had a teleporter installed into his apartment that led to the main lab, and there were frightening rumors that a second teleporter was installed that led directly to the underground complex. Wait! I see something outside my window, a darker patch against the night sky. I must hurry! Somehow the facility was invaded from within. I did not work in the deeper recesses, and I can’t provide a definitive cause for the horror which boiled upward from the caves, but I suspect the tomb has been found. My wife was visiting me that terrible, cursed day, and I lost her in the flight from the underground warrens. I tried to go back later, wanted to pull her from the maws of that hellish complex, but I had seen things, and my mind would not allow me to return, not even for her. I will attempt again, though I know I will die there, beneath the mountains. I can only hope that some remaining employees, perhaps those stationed in the main lab, closer to the surface and in charge of the weapons, were able to make a stand, and my wife is now with them. Victoria, my dear sweet wife, I am so very sorry. Please forgive me. If I fail in my task, I pray that the reader of my last testament go to the apartment, find the portal, and accomplish what I could not. Dr. Lucas Mott P.S. From the Latin, aude sapere means “to dare to know”. Damn my soul (and it will be damned), I wish that we had not!
