Fixes/Features since v0.07: + Mostly bug fixes no longer documented. -------------------------------------------------------- WHAT IS REQUIRED TO PLAY THE HERESY? -------------------------------------------------------- HERESY requires both DOOM II and HERETIC registered versions. It will work ONLY with HERETIC: SOTSR v1.3. It's designed to run under ZDOOM 2.0.xx or higher but will work with RISEN3D and ZDAEMON with some limitations. You'll need also DEUTEX 4.4 for the installation, it's included in the package. You can find ZDOOM at www.zdoom.org and here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=86578 The RISEN3D homepage is here: http://risen3d.newdoom.com And you can find ZDAEMON here: www.zdaemon.org. If you don't have HERETIC may be this is a good time to purchase it. Go to www.ravensoft.com or www.raven-games.com. You should buy HERETIC even if you don't like it, but i do. -------------------------------------------------------- MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS -------------------------------------------------------- You need at least a Pentium 133 with 32 mb of RAM and a decent PCI graphics card to play THE HERESY. But in low resolution mode, of course. It will be playable on multiplayer as well, with a decent framerate. A Pentium II 233 with 64 mb of ram or equivalent is recommended. It will not run on a 386 with 4 mb and a Trident card. :( -------------------------------------------------------- SOME TECHNICAL AND LEGAL STUFF -------------------------------------------------------- To some extent THE HERESY is a collection of patches to port the HERETIC levels to DOOM II. No HERETIC level is included in this package. Of course that would be illegal. All the stuff will be extracted from HERETIC, that includes the levels, textures, sounds and musics. The file HERESY.WAD will be generated during installation and contains the necessary data to play. Of course it includes lots of copyrighted material and you ARE NOT allowed to distribute it. You can only distribute with no restrictions the file HERESY.ZIP unmodified. You may not sell any of the contents of this package. This modification will work only with the full registered version of HERETIC: SOTSR. You can do whatever you want with the modified graphics included in this package provided you give proper credit to the authors, they now belong to the DOOM community. Of course with the permission of id software. Remember that the Hell Marquis graphics are by Björn Ostmann. Neither Raven nor id software have nothing to do with this project so don't bother them about it. Don't bother GOD ROMERO neither. The file DM2CONV.EXE is a copy of the file you can find in DM2CNV32.ZIP at 3darchives.in-span.net and thanks to Vincenzo Alcamo has no restrictions in its distribution. The file CLED.EXE is a copy of the one in EDITUTIL.ZIP from TEAM TNT, this program is freeware and it's by Jim Flynn. I recommend you to get the latest version of The Patcher Utilities by Jim Flynn from his homepage at: http://home.pacbell.net/jflynn/software.html The file DEUTEX.EXE is a copy of the file in DEUTEX44.ZIP at www.teaser.fr/~amajorel/deutex and can be freely distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License v2 or later. The heretic skin contained in HSKIN.WAD was originally a replacement player by Vincent Fong of Team Onslaught, then made into an skin by Gokuma. DOOM (TM) and DOOM II (TM) (c) 1993, 1994 id software. HERESY.BEX, patch to play with the classic weapons. COMWEAP.BEX, patch to play with the commercial version weapons. R3DHACK.DEH, hack to force it to run under RISEN3D 1.6.11 and up. LICENSE, DEUTEX license. -------------------------------------------------------- FILES CREATED DURING INSTALLATION -------------------------------------------------------- HERESY.WAD, file with the neccessary data to play. R3DHACK.WAD, RISEN3D hack resource file. ZDAEMONF.WAD, ZDAEMON fix resource file. -------------------------------------------------------- ADDITIONAL FILES -------------------------------------------------------- These are intended for external use, with other wads. Don't use them with THE HERESY! CWEAP.BEX, classic weapons patch. CWEAP.WAD, classic weapons patch resource file. SPLASH.WAD, splashes wad. CLASDM2.RSP, classic style DOOM2 patch. The splashes will work with ZDOOM 2.0.xx, ZDOOM 1.23b33 and ZDAEMON 1.06. The classic weapons patch will work with BOOM in both DOOM2 and DOOM modes. The classic style DOOM2 response file is for DM2CONV, it will convert any DOOM2 levels into classic DOOM style maps. They will need to be played in DOOM2 however. I've never used it but it's there. -------------------------------------------------------- INSTALLING THE HERESY -------------------------------------------------------- Installation is clean and safe, but you should keep a copy of HERESY.ZIP. Unzip the files to a clean directory of your choice. Copy there doom2.wad and heretic.wad. Unzip there ZDOOM-2.0.xx-win32.CAB. If you are using DEUTEX 4.4 under pure DOS you'll need also CWSDPMI. Type INSTALL. Some subdirectories will be deleted after installation, that's why you must use a clean directory to install the modification. This may take some time depending on your system, it will take less than two minutes on a Pentium 133. The file HERESY.WAD will be generated during installation. If something goes wrong you can take a look at INSTALL.LOG. The installation uses DEUTEX to extract all the resources from HERETIC. Your DOOM2.WAD must not be write protected, since it needs to be modified during installation. Then it will be restored. Your HERETIC.WAD will be renamed to HERETIC.BAK after installation. If everything goes right HERESY.WAD will be about 18 mb in size. Installation will fail if you run it twice, you must unzip HERESY.ZIP again and delete HERESY.WAD before running it again. If your DOOM iwad is present in the installation directory then the optional DOOM compatibility will be enabled. All the DOOM textures not present in DOOM2 will be added to HERESY.WAD, DOOM musics will be added too. In this mode the installation will build an iwad instead of a pwad. Installation will only work under WINDOWS platforms, sorry about this but there is no LINUX version of DM2CONV. It has been tested under WIN 9x, DOS and WIN XP. -------------------------------------------------------- PLAYING THE HERESY -------------------------------------------------------- HERESY is designed to run under ZDOOM 2.0.xx. To play in single player run HERESY.BAT. The batch file will only work if ZDOOM is installed in the same directory as THE HERESY. HERESY will run properly only in DOOM2 mode. You can use the batch files to run multiplayer games too from the command line with additional parameters, see below. Alternatively you can use any launcher, damn it! You'll need to load a BEX patch and HERESY.WAD into ZDOOM. You can play with the HERESY.BEX file, which adds blood, classic weapons, the Hell Marquis and a few gameplay modifications. This is strongly recommended. The Hell Marquis is an SS nazi replacement. Alternatively you can use COMWEAP.BEX, to play with the normal DOOM II weapons, not recommended. It adds only the blood, Hell Marquis and some modifications to enhance game balance and fix some problems. You don't need to load any patch to play deathmatches anyway, but you NEED one of them for single player and coop. You may want to add HSKIN.WAD too to play with the elf skin, or else put it in a skins subdirectory. To get the most out of DM play you need to know the HERETIC secrets. These levels work best from 6 to 8 players, despite of the fact that there are only 4 DM starts. There are additional weapons however. Since new graphics for blood have been added, don't use particles for them, use sprites instead. DOOM will be bloodier than ever. Once you are in the game you can select the episode you want to play from the game menu. HERESY is designed with OpenGL in mind but ZDOOMGL doesn't even have dynamic lights now. Version 0.8x should run THE HERESY properly. It works with 0.7x however and it looks very good. Currently monsters walk over water in 0.75. Don't use models, use sprites to play. To reach some places or to escape from a trap you need to use walls to activate a teleporter or a lift. Sometimes you need to jump to reach some platforms. But this is rare. You shouldn't jump too much, unless it's obvious that you can't get there by other ways. HERETIC wasn't designed to jump, but you needed to fly sometimes. Ultraviolence is seriously recommended for the first three episodes. These levels should be challenging for good players, the first episode is a bit easy but the latter are quite hard. On E5M1 in UV, there's a nasty cyberdemon at the end of the level. You should save your plasma ammo until then. Be warned SOTSR levels on UV are really hard. On E4M2 you must use the walls in front of the western and eastern balconies if you jump down to the outer nukage area in order to be teleported to the opposite side of the level. E6M3 it's there, warp to level 48 to play it. Now you can play other wads with the classic weapons patch and the splashes, using the external files CWEAP.BEX, CWEAP.WAD and SPLASH.WAD. But don't use them with THE HERESY! If you install the iwad you can use 'zdoom -iwad heresy.wad -deh heresy.bex' to play of course. HERESY.BAT will work too. -------------------------------------------------------- PLAYING NETWORK GAMES UNDER ZDOOM -------------------------------------------------------- (Taken from the ZDOOM manual) To start (host) a game you simply type: zdoom -host where x is the number of players that are going to be in the game (including yourself). To join a game you simply type: zdoom -join where host ip is the ip address of the "host" computer. -------------------------------------------------------- RUNNING UNDER ZDOOM 1.2x AND ZDAEMON 1.06 -------------------------------------------------------- HERESY does not support old versions of ZDOOM. It will crash at startup. I think ZDAEMON is based on 1.23b33 and i haven't tested it. It will probably crash too. I've included a fix due to the interest of GOD ROMERO in ZDAEMON. You'll miss some features, like sky lightning, ice effects, episode selection and the finales. But that's not much of a problem for deathmatches. Besides the BEX patch, HERESY.BEX recommended, and the file HERESY.WAD you need to add ZDAEMONF.WAD. Unfortunately MAPINFO and TERRAIN lumps are cumulative, so you must manually remove the entries from HERESY.WAD. You must make a copy of HERESY.WAD but using a different filename, such as ZDAEMHER.WAD. E.g. copy heresy.wad zdaemher.wad ... Then use a wad utility to remove the TERRAIN and MAPINFO lumps from ZDAEMHER.WAD. You can use NWT 1.3 by Denis Möller, it's very easy to use. E.g. type in something like 'nwt -file mywad.wad'. Type in the name of the entry you want to find. Then use the spacebar to select the entries you want to delete and the minus key on the numpad to delete them. Hit ESC to exit. You can use XWE by Csabo too, it's a very good tool. Now you must add ZDAEMONF.WAD too while running the HERESY. This should work but i haven't tried it. You can download NWT 1.3 from the official archive at: ftp://3darchives.in-span.net/pub/idgames You'd better go to www.doomworld.com/idgames and do a search. You can get DM2CONV there too. You can grab XWE at www.doomworld.com/xwe This fix will work too with ZDOOM 1.2x and ZDOOMGL 0.664. But you won't get splashing water with these. I don't recommend them. And you'll need to use IDCLEV to play the different episodes of course. You'll need to warp to the appropiate maps manually to play the other episodes: MAP10, MAP19, MAP28, MAP37 and MAP46. -------------------------------------------------------- HACK FOR RISEN3D 1.6.11 AND UP -------------------------------------------------------- RISEN3D is based on DOOMSDAY and was known before as BOOMSDAY, in case you didn't know. Without this hack it would crash almost inmediately. This engine has a poor dehacked support, many patches don't work. You need the dehacked patches to play with the Hell Marquis. Of course you'll miss some features with RISEN3D. HERESY blood is not as good as with ZDOOM. Splashes are not configurable so they don't work for now. You can't see some episode finales. Sky definitions don't work. Graham Jackson is already working to enhance MAPINFO support and to add partial TERRAIN support, so splashes hopefully will work soon. It has lots of eye-candy and it's quite promising. I've introduced this hack to make it run, if you want to play it in doomsday. No classic weapons of course. You'll need to load the file R3DHACK.DEH instead of the BEX files and to add the file R3DHACK.WAD at startup besides HERESY.WAD. HERESY works pretty well with it and looks AWESOME with the new palette. RISEN3D 1.6.xx will play THE HERESY but with more limitations, using IDCLEV. -------------------------------------------------------- SPLITSCREEN MULTIPLAYER WITH LEGACY -------------------------------------------------------- Other BOOM compatible engines are no longer supported but if you're really desperate to play splitscreen multiplayer LEGACY 1.41a will run, more or less, the first three episodes. Of course you'll need to use the MAP command and the secret exits won't work. You'll miss a lot of features and you'll have to rename HERESY.BEX to HERESY.DEH as well. Probably COMWEAP.BEX will work better for splitscreen multiplayer. It's easy to modify the installation to get a data file and two level wads, one for the original HERETIC levels and another one for the SOTSR levels. Another possibility is to extract the levels from HERESY.WAD to two files and remap the wad with the SOTSR levels. -------------------------------------------------------- NOTES FROM THE AUTHORS -------------------------------------------------------- HERESY TEAM IS: John Mullins aka DRFRAG: Project lead, design, level editing (beta), weapon graphics editing, dehacked patches, miscellaneous patches, conversion file, testing, installation, palette editing, docs. Rafael Angel Jimenez aka THE MASTER: Level editing (beta), demos (earlier alphas), testing. Björn Ostmann aka BOBJET: Title graphic, Hell Marquis graphics. Although THE HERESY uses some ZDOOM features these are just regular BOOM levels, since a few extended BOOM linedef types are used. BOOM thing flags are not. We have used the following tools: DEUTEX 3.6 and 4.4, WINTEX, DEHACKED, DETH 4.24, NWT 1.3, DM2CONV, CLED, STUCK, WADWARP, PAINT SHOP PRO 3.11 and 6.02, ENDOOMER, INKWORKS, STAT, XWE... By the way DETH crashes a lot while searching things on these levels. And CLED cannot recognize the not single thing flag, v4.88. PATCHER is much better than DEUTEX. We'd like to thank the authors of all these tools and all the levels we have played for keeping the game alive so long, specially TNT, PLUTONIA, MEMENTO MORI I and II, REQUIEM, STRAIN, ETERNAL, ALIEN VENDETTA, BIOWAR, THE DARKENING EPISODE II, VILE FLESH, GOTHIC DM I and II, MRDOOM30, TNT BLOODLANDS, TNT GRIEVANCE, TNT PURSUIT, RELIVE, SLUGFEST... Hey, THE MASTER'S DOMAIN is a very good episode for HERETIC. You should download and play it. Thanks also to Raven and id software for such two great games. To John Romero for being 'THE GOD HIMSELF' and DOOM E1. Special thanks go to Vincenzo Alcamo for DM2CONV, without it THE HERESY would have not been possible. The same to Jim Flynn for CLED and STUCK. To Vincent Fong and Gokuma for the elf skin graphics. The Gokuma homepage is here: http://pit.condemned.com/download.html To O.Montanny and A.Majorel for DEUTEX. To Randy Heit for ZDOOM, Lee Killough for BOOM and MBF, Colin Phipps for PRBOOM, Jaakko Keronen for DOOMSDAY... To Graham Jackson for RISEN3D and for being an heretic. To Team TNT for the cool TNT music and TNT sky. To Pete Kempson aka Corwin for blood splashes and splashes information. To Ty Halderman for maintaining the DOOM archive at ftp.cdrom.com. To Csabo for XWE. To Simon Howard aka Fraggle for some information on DOOM textures. To Nigel Rowand aka Enjay for supporting and playing THE HERESY. Finally thanks to you for downloading and playing THE HERESY. And don't forget to download THE REBIRTH, an amazing 32 level episode for DOOM II by Björn Ostmann. -------------------------------------------------------- THE STORY SO FAR -------------------------------------------------------- You are an elf, one of Parthoris' toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action... Well, i was kidding a little ;) Some years have passed since your old friend CORVUS defeated D'SPARIL, but now the hell inhabitants have installed in Parthoris with the help of the UAC technology. Your mission as the toughest marine in the universe is to reestablish peace on that world. You must be wondering: "Oh, fine, but if you lived in different worlds how the HELL could you know CORVUS?" OK, this plot is rather silly but can you think of something better? And anyway, who needs a plot? -------------------------------------------------------- HERESY OBJECTIVES -------------------------------------------------------- It's pretty obvious, you have to beat all the levels (as always) and frag everything that moves they contain. And of course save the elven world. --------------------------------------------------------- BUGS AND TROUBLESHOOTING --------------------------------------------------------- Well, at least your computer won't be f*cked up. Bullet puffs appear over splashing water, that's a ZDOOM bug. The shotgun reloading sequence has some side-effects: You will reload when you run out of ammo and everytime you die, posthumously. That's unavoidable since i've used the deselect frames for the reloading. You'll have to deal with it. In software mode some monsters will fade to golden yellow in the distance, due to the poor colormaps for them. That's unavoidable due to the custom palette, in OpenGL they look fine. The TNT sky doesn't look very good if you set the gamma correction level too high. Otherwise it looks fine. The end of E4M1 doesn't work like in HERETIC, due to the way DOOM handles some line specials. Don't jump to the exit, wait until the platform rises to your level and then walk forth and back to open the side doors, if you want. The yellow key on E2M2 will be displaced by the lava current and fall to the pit. This is not a bug. To reach some areas or to escape from others you must use walls to activate lifts or teleporters. You can't fly here like in HERETIC. If you jump down to the secret area with the nukage in E4M2 you need to use the walls in front of the balconies to teleport back above. You are not supposed to access map E6M3 from E6M2, you must warp to that level using IDCLEV. E6M3 has no exit but it works. --------------------------------------------------------- SILLY FAQ --------------------------------------------------------- Hey, can't you think of another less stupid plot for THE HERESY? Definitely yes. CORVUS due to his magic powers knows of the existence of the best fragging marine on earth, you. By an energetic portal he penetrates into our world, where you become friends and swap stories about battles with golems, ophidians, cacodemons, imps and all. He convinces you to go with him to his own world, becouse it has been invaded by the hordes of hell thanks to the the UAC machinery. You are an expert fragging those monsters, unknown for him. He can deal with gargoyles and other magical creatures instead. And he's too busy trying to find a cure for a plague or something. Oh, well. Forget it, this plot isn't very good either. --------------------------------------------------------- Why can't i find the phoenix rod, hellstaff or other cool artifacts? That's simple. This is DOOM and not HERETIC, *sshole. Play HERETIC. By the way, what the HELL do you mean by cool artifacts? Seriously future versions could include some cool artifacts. --------------------------------------------------------- Have you thought about converting the DOOM levels to HERETIC? No, HERETIC is a quite good game, specially in deathmatch, but DOOM is better. But, hey, may be it's not a bad idea. We could include the DOOM monsters too, and even the weapons. But, one moment, then it would be DOOM. Definitely we won't do it. --------------------------------------------------------- Hey, this is too hard. I get killed on the first level. You must be very bad then, these levels are only slightly harder than in original HERETIC. It should be challenging for good players but the first three episodes probably won't very be playable on anything less than ultraviolence. --------------------------------------------------------- HERESY runs too slow on my computer. What can i do? Buy a faster computer. Seriously the minimum requirements are quite low, I started playing DOOM on a 386sx with 3 mb of RAM, running it under Windows 3.1 using virtual memory. I played with almost minimum screen size, low detail, and pc speaker. I got less than 10 fps but it was still great. --------------------------------------------------------- HERESY is too intrincate, i've been wandering for several days and can't find the exits nor the keys. That's not our fault, some of the HERETIC levels are a bit intrincate. There are some nasty spots: On E4M8 you must shoot to the walls beyond the other side of the broken bridge to make it rise. On E5M1 there's a fake wall you need to find to get out of the trap with the cacodemons. On E5M6 there's a switch near the door at the start of the level, at your left as you open the entrance door for the first time. That switch is hidden behind wall that moves later. You need to come back to the start of the level later on. On E5M7 inside the elevated house there's a wooden barrier that needs to be shot to access the other side. --------------------------------------------------------- Why do some monsters look different from DOOM when i play THE HERESY? That's becouse the game palettes are different. The graphics look fine in OpenGL but in software mode the colormaps are poor for them. They look fine up close but fade to golden yellow in the distance. --------------------------------------------------------- I'm not completely convinced. I need a better plot. OK, you damn b*stard. Here we go. The UAC at last managed to enhance their dimensional travel devices and lately they've been working on the time travel stuff. Sadly an army of hellspawn was going for a walk near the new UAC headquarters and they decided to have a look at it. They were not welcome and that really upset them so they decided to frag everyone there and take the new artifacts. The UAC was not ready for a new invasion and despite of the marines being well organized they were massacred after a hard fight. So the demons stole their time travelling device. The lord of chaos, the stronger cyberdemon ever known, planned to travel to the elven world and get magical weapons to destroy humankind and take revenge from the marines and the UAC. Apparently there was nothing wrong with it. However the UAC decided to strike back. The UAC still had another prototype, so they gathered some of the best marines and sent them to kill the demons and recover the stolen device. But the radio messages were not good at all. Inhuman growls and terrible death screams were transmitted. The UAC headquarter received noise from a big battle and then there was silence. There were more attempts but all of them failed. Some specially skillful marines managed to reach farther, but in the end they become mad and died in a horrible way or the transmission was cut. One of them described a great battlefield covered with corpses, but most of the dead were from the side of the marines. Many of them had a so violent death that their bodies had exploded. Demons had destroyed some bodies, taking away their brains and spine. Mutilated bodies floated on a red river filled with blood. He was discovered, his last words talked about doom and despair. There were howls, bone crunching and tearing flesh sounds. The UAC bosses know that you are the best marine in the galaxy and the last hope of humankind. The time to revive old nightmares has come. This time won't be so easy, it seems that new evil creatures have allied with your old enemies. You remember your old dead comrades before departing to kill up to the last demon of hell. This time will be the last one, you think not very convinced. Your mission is simple, since there are no survivors you must frag everything that moves and recover the lost device, using it to return to the present time. The UAC has equipped you with the most sophisticated armament. You hold tight your BFG-9000 and get ready for a fragfest. The machinery turns on, a blinding light engulfs you and you appear in the middle of a typical medieval building. As always, something has gone wrong. All the cool armament has dissapeared and you only have your reglamentary pistol left. You damn those UAC b*stards one more time. You'll look for those weapons later. You're slipping over human flesh, the smell of rotten meat is unbearable. You're surrounded by viscera and exploded bodies. Any other would have become mad and suicided before they killed him, not you. You've seen this kind of stuff before. You hear a growl, an ex-human sargeant salutes you. You fire at some barrels and their entrails fall all over you giving you a nice bloodbath. Not bad for a start. You get his shotgun and you smile, it's all that you need. There are lots of shells among the corpses. A pack of imps runs to you thinking about having a new feast, you smile again and know they won't get it. And this plot has nothing to do with CORVUS. --------------------------------------------------------- Hey, wait a moment. Something is not right. If i'm a marine, why the HELL do i start with the small wand from HERETIC, did CORVUS lent it to me? Of course not, that plot is from a previous version of THE HERESY. Now you are CORVUS and must frag all the hellspawn to save the world of the elves again. UPDATE: You're not CORVUS anymore. You are a marine again. :) We removed the HERETIC weapons and monsters. Oh, to HELL with it. --------------------------------------------------------- Why isn't the E3 sky used? That's becouse the domes shattered after the death of d'sparil and then the cities were flooded. Some time after the ocean dried. And finally the demons came through a timegate. HERESY is set some years after HERETIC. Well, that was of course another bad joke from Drfrag. I didn't like E3 sky that much, it's there for levels with no sky. --------------------------------------------------------- EDITING FOR THE HERESY --------------------------------------------------------- You can develop your own levels for THE HERESY. Despite of not including all DOOM II monsters THE HERESY BEX patches are fully compatible with DOOM II, save the SS nazi. The Hell Marquis replaces the wolfy soldier. You can use the dehacked patches with your levels, having the Hell Marquis. You can use any of them. The SS nazi is not supported. You can use all the DOOM II and HERETIC textures in your levels, save the wolfenstein textures. All the switches will work. You can use the DOOM textures too if DOOM textures support is enabled. To enable it DOOM must be present in the installation directory while installing THE HERESY. You can try the DOOM levels running THE HERESY in DOOM mode with ZDOOM 2.0.xx. To do it use DOOM.WAD as your iwad and load HERESY.WAD as a pwad, you'll be able to play DOOM with the new palette, using IDCLEV or the MAP command to start the DOOM episodes. But remember that HERESY.WAD is meant to be used with DOOM2. You can use the DOOM musics in your wads too, with ZDOOM. In DOOM compatibility mode the installation will build an iwad to make your life easier. You can use this iwad with your usual wad tools renaming it to doom2.wad if necessary. This iwad doesn't have the ZZWOLF textures defined. The Hell Marquis uses the BOS3 sprites, you'll need to configure your level editor since the wolf3d sprites are not included in the iwad. The commander keen has different graphics and it's not officially supported, but it works. The musics D_EVIL and D_ULTIMA are not included in the iwad. MUS_TNT is available as D_EVIL as well and D_READ_M is available as D_ULTIMA too. HERESYD.DAT is used to build the iwad and HERESY.DAT to build the pwad. Of course you'll need to add a MAPINFO lump to your wad for ZDOOM. HERESY.WAD will run with BOOM compatible engines, but you can use your own custom textures directly ONLY with ZDOOM 2.x.xx. Only ZDOOM can load several wads with external textures properly. For BOOM you'll have to merge your texture definitions with those of the HERESY. They are defined in HERTEXT1.TXT and HERTEXTD1.TXT, the last one is for DOOM compatibility mode. But you don't need to worry about that if you use HERESY.WAD as your iwad. This is strongly recommended for wad authors. Some textures have the same name in DOOM and DOOM2, but they are different textures. These DOOM textures are supported, but with a different name. SW[12]BRN1 --> SW[12]BRN3 SW[12]STARG --> SW[12]STAR2 SW[12]STONE --> SW[12]STON3 SW[12]STON2 --> SW[12]STON4 The custom palette shows perfect HERETIC graphics. The weapon and Marquis graphics in INSTALL.WAD have the doom palette but the skies have the HERESY palette. The elf skin has the HERESY palette too. There are splashes available for HERETIC water, sludge, lava and DOOM water, lava, nukage and blood. Nukage splashes use the blood splash sprites due to a limitation of the number of available frames for some splashes in ZDOOM. Blood splashes use the slime, nukage, splash sprites. There are 10 sky textures available to choose from, but only 7 different skies. You can replace the patches for the first three, which are included for compatibility, or use the MAPINFO lump to have any of the other 7 sky textures. You can use all HERETIC and DOOM II musics with your levels. To edit your levels don't forget to load HERESY.WAD in your level editor. The users of your levels must have both games of course, or the three if you're using the iwad, and load HERESY.WAD after installing THE HERESY. Or you can use THE HERESY as a base and change HERESY.DAT to include HERETIC monsters and weapons in your projects, ZDOOM 2.0.64 will support them. Future versions could probably include some artifacts like the 'dog shit', a modified morph ovum, and the wings of wrath for multiplayer. A more powerful version of the phoenix rod could be included too. And even real elves vs marines multiplayer battles.
